ABOUT THE BOOK
My book THE ARTISTS OF THE INVISIBLE DOG is a collection of 31 portraits. Already in its 2nd printing, this book received Best in Show at the Davis Orton Gallery. I was also honored to receive recognition as a Best of ASMP photographer for this project in 2013.
The goal of this year-long project was very simple: to photograph each artist of The Invisible Dog Community in his/her studio. I was initially interested in how artists occupied and used their space through time, concentrating on the nuances of creative environments. But I did not want this to be a documentation of workspaces. Instead, I wanted to visually connect the artists to their work, space and artistic processes in a conceptual way.
Individually, each portrait tells a unique story; collectively, they are the creative energy that is the modern day Invisible Dog.
A challenge of the project was to represent each artist truthfully. If I succeeded at that, then by definition they all would be unique. I met with each individual, sometimes for a couple hours, to talk about their work, their background, their processes, their quirks, their inspirations, and their space. I then whittled down the information and settled on a central concept for each artist.
